Taking a Holistic Stock

Finding and maintaining balance can be challenging depending on the demands of your daily lifestyle. It is a good idea, when trying to restore or maintain equilibrium, to take a holistic approach-the mind and the body needs each other. It is possible for stress to manifest in physical symptoms, and the reverse is quite likely. Here are some key areas to explore and consider if you have not been feeling quite like yourself:

1. Sleep – what you do in your waking hours may be just as important during sleep. Making mindful decisions to develop a healthy sleep pattern can be very beneficial to physical, spiritual and mental health. Research has found that the body rejuvenates during sleep, and that an important process to include detoxification of the liver occurs in deep sleep. It has also been noted that sleeping and waking up late is one of the main causes of liver damage.

2. Diet and Nutrition – remember the phrase, “you are what you eat!” Consuming in abundance certain foods, can lead to mental and medical concerns. As well as certain foods- “brain foods” can improve mental conditions and help maintain physical health.

3. Exercise – this has not only been found to maintain healthy weight, and a strong heart. Much study has shown that physical activity improves emotional and mental health. One study found that short workouts of 8 minutes in length could help lower sadness, tension and anger along with improving resistance to disease in healthy people.

4. Spirituality – your perception on life also makes a huge difference when trying to restore or maintain balance. Understanding your purpose, and being able to find meaning in your core beliefs can be a positive factor as you maneuver your daily life.

5. Social Life – whether it is family or friends, quality human interaction reminds us that there is not always a time for work. Laughing with the people you enjoy can provide an emotional or spiritual lift. Work- Yes! This may include volunteer work or monetary compensation work. For some this occupies the largest portion of most days out of seven. Since it does, remind yourself to take breaks, and time off to help maintain balance. Bear in mind that work comes in different shapes, forms and sizes.

6. Leisure Activities – enjoying your hobbies, or having down time encourages relaxation and the reduction of tension. Make time for your self.

Most of all it is important to work on your self-awareness- to know yourself enough to realize when you are ‘off balance.’
